This journey was quite epic, we drove right through the Dolomite Mountains and crossed 2 passes reaching a maximum altitude of just over 7340 feet!
A pan across Cortina d’Ampazzo, an upmarket ski resort during the winter months….
This reconstructed wooden chapel was built by Alpine soldiers in memory of the Italian, Austro-Hungarian and German battalions that fought in this area and the soldiers that lost their lives during WW1….
The first pass we crossed (only a mere 6900 feet above sea level!)….
After all that excitement a coffee break was called for….
Despite the altitude, the valleys are very lush and green….
These cheeky little Piaggio three wheelers get everywhere, even up here!…..
An iconic view that most people associate with the Dolomites….
It’s a long and winding road to get to the top of the pass….
On the way up we spotted this little fella, we think it is a Marmot (twice the size of a guinea pig)….
Now we are really high….
Big peaks matron!….
One of the many very 'individual' and quirky styled hotels….but strangely endearing….
And to finish the day we stopped in the Sosta near Tesero (where we were a few days ago in the fog!)….
So glad the weather cleared so you could see the impressive scenery.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading your Austrian blog.

ReplyDeleteFantastic photographs. Maybe I will need to try skiing there next winter. Keep them coming.
