Situated in a wide river valley surrounded by the peaks of the Ammergauer Alps, this quaint little town is world renowned for its Passion Play, performed every decade since the 17th century by the villagers as a collective thank you for being spared from the plague.
However we were particularly impressed for the towns other claim to fame, its Luft-malerei, the wonderful painted house facades….
The Palatushaus with painted 3D columns and architectural detailing….
a country scene….
This building has a large beer hall scene on the front….
where everybody appears to be having a jolly time….
Our favourite house paintings were No 48 and No 41 along the Ettalerstrasse, where various scenes from Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel are portrayed….
We rather liked the dog and his kennel at No 41….
The tradition of painting house facades continues even on modern chalets….
Looks as though they paintings may be based on Austrian fables. Hugs and love Mumski xxxxxx
