The Stellplatze in the small town of Rain had an excellent cycle route to Donauworth (about 12km away) we availed ourselves of….
Donauworth is a pretty town sitting on the confluence of the Danube and Wornitz rivers. The high street seen here was 75% destroyed during WW2….
The post war restoration of the steep roofed medieval houses is very impressive ….
Along the high street we noticed this engaging piece of modern sculpture, the massive solid marble ball floats on a slick of water pumped up from below allowing it to be moved and spun with little effort. It was strangely relaxing to play with….
The gate house leading to Ried Island which was where the original 5th century fishing village of Donauworth was located….
We could not get far enough away from the soaring baroque church of Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche at the top of the hill for a better photo!….
The church has been a pilgrimage site since a chip of wood believed to have come from the Holy Cross was housed here, unfortunately the small chapel housing the relic was under restoration and not available to view. The rest of the church is another example of fine and ornate baroque artistry….
we saw this type of display in Innsbruck and again here…… this is the skeletal remains of a saint, clothed and posed, displayed in a glass cabinet
And finally………… ever had problems with nests blocking your chimney? ….
Donauworth does not sound Germanic - wonder how it got the name? Hugs and love Mumski xx
