This medieval town sits above the river Lech and has over 500 listed buildings within the town walls including a whole load of gateways!…….. so a taster follows….
Across the river and it’s massive weir towards the old town….
This is the Schmalzturm, the East town gateway rebuilt in the 15th century and left stranded, overlooking the town square, when the main fortifications were moved further out….
Opposite the Schmalzturm is the town hall with it’s stucco facade by Dominikus Zimmerman (remember the Wieskirche in E27?)….
The North gate is at the end of these pretty pastel coloured buildings….
The relatively unassuming Johanniskirche is another church designed by Dominikus Zimmerman (who also lived in the town and was once Mayor)….
includes more of his Baroque styling, the highlight being this unique Rococo altar….
the inside of the church is again circular in shape, similar to the Wieskirche, with centrally placed and curved pews….
The ‘Bakers’ gateway….
The ‘Dyers’ gateway….
The 15th century parish church….
which inside includes a barrel nave stuccoed to Baroque perfection while a cast of saints populate the columns and alcoves above the pews….
On the hike up the hill to the Eastern edge of the town we spotted this cheeky little roof top balcony (nice!)
On the outer reaches is the Bayertor, the original town gateway from 1425….
After all this sightseeing we had built up quite an appetite, so having positioned ourselves further North in the Stellplatze in Friedsberg (see below), we tucked into a traditional Bavarian dish of Weisswurst served with Susser Senf and pretzels (white bangers, sweet mustard and bread!)…… very nice indeed!
Great photography! Mumski with Hugs and love xxxxxxxx
